Podcast - Episode 6 - Conflict Resolution and Emergency Management During Covid-19 with Dr. Bina Patel

In this fascinating episode, I had the privilege of virtually sitting down with Dr. Bina Patel. Dr. Patel specializes in conflict resolution and organizational health, working in emergency management. She provides conflict management services to reduce workforce turnover, increase morale, and decrease costs in organizational systems - no small feat during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We discuss everything from how difficult it is to self-isolate at a time when, as human beings, we all so desperately crave the comfort of companionship, to the incredible bravery and self-sacrifice of those working on the front-lines during the pandemic. How leaders are born of adversity and why Transformational Leadership, not Traditional Top-Down Leadership, is the key to managing teams and coming out the other side of this intact.

Dr. Patel also shares a personal story of a time that she was trapped in a toxic workplace culture with toxic leadership. Her insights on what drives people who get a little bit of power, or a title, to abuse that power in an autocratic way rather than use it to help and inspire others is powerful stuff. We also discuss the breakdown of trust in organizations - citing the example of the staff walk-out at a nursing home in Riverside, CA that was in the news - and how that is a reflection of poor leadership and of an environment that was already broken, exacerbating the fear of the staff rather than quelling it.

We wrap up the episode with Dr. Patel sharing what she feels is the most important quality of a gentlewoman to emulate today - you're going to love her choice!

While the topics we discussed were on the heavy side, we still were able to find joy and laughter in the hour we spent together - something that is so critical for our mental health right now. She was a delightful, insightful, and thoughtful guest - I hope you enjoy this episode.

In today's episode, I was delighted to have one of my favorite voices on the topic of workplace culture as my guest: Heidi Lynne Kurter.

Heidi shares her personal story of being the target of a relentless workplace bully as well as other very painful losses she's endured; her harrowing story had me in tears, so have tissues ready.

The day her female workplace bully thought SHE won, Heidi left work and went home and wrote her very first article for Forbes about workplace bullying. That brave pivot at a devastating time was the start of an incredible journey for Heidi and she hasn't looked back since. As always, we wrap up the episode with Heidi sharing what she feels is the most important quality of a gentlewoman to emulate today - her choice is spot on, especially as the pandemic rages on around us.

I just know this episode is going to resonate with so many of you. If you are being bullied at work, at school or even at home, please KNOW you are not alone, we are here for you!

Podcast - Episode 4 - Leading Professionally & Personally During Times of Crisis with Trey Griggs

Lyrics from John Lennon's "Nobody Told Me" have been running through my mind over the last few weeks: "Strange Days Indeed - Most Peculiar, Mama..."

The swiftness with which the CoVid-19 pandemic came in upon us has had a startling and unprecedented effect on humanity and life as we've all known it. In Episode 4 with Mr. Trey Griggs, we talk about how the demand upon leaders has skyrocketed as they face challenges most would never have anticipated in their lifetimes. How Leadership in the family is equally as critical during this crisis and how the tone set by parents can be a game-changer for our children, who are far less prepared to cope with such shocking changes in their world. We discuss the importance of teaching our children social responsibility, striving for excellence but not perfection, how being a "Generalist" rather than a "Specialist" can be a saving grace, and how even during times of fear, true leaders are revealed and step up to the call to serve others.

We wrap up the episode with Trey sharing what he feels is the most important quality of a gentleman to emulate today - hint: it's probably one of the most difficult to master but so important!

ABOUT MY GUEST Trey Griggs

Trey Griggs is a classic jack-of-all-trades, master of none character. From teaching high school physics to flipping homes, there aren’t too many jobs Trey hasn’t attempted, and, according to him, he’s enjoyed just about every one of them. Trey currently works within the transportation industry as a technology consultant and an industry personality, often incorporating the skills he’s acquired in his previous roles to entertain, educate, and inspire those around him. His passion is helping people live a more enjoyable, fulfilling life, and he sees technology as a main driver to accomplishing those goals.

Podcast - Episode 2 - "The Arsonist in the Office" with Author Pete Havel

In today's episode I was thrilled to have my first podcast guest: Author Pete Havel.

Pete & I talk about some of the big organizations in the news right now that are reeling from the consequences of allowing toxic workplace cultures, workplace harassment, whistleblowing and retaliation to run unchecked: Boeing, Houston Astros, Wells Fargo, & Away Luggage just to name a few.

We discuss the multi-faceted costs to organizations who choose short-cuts and cover-ups to handle serious complaints in the workplace, why co-workers tend to look the other way when they see ethical issues and toxic behavior, and why it's so hard for people to do the right thing (I think Pete uses the word "spineless" in his reply...)

We also discuss the damage caused by false accusers in the workplace and how women bullying other women rather than supporting them actually erodes the progress made by the Me-Too-Movement and the brave women that have spoken out about it.

We wrap up the episode with Pete sharing what he feels is the most important quality of a gentleman to emulate today - and I couldn't agree more with his choice.

Thank you, Pete, for being my first Podcast guest!

ABOUT MY GUEST : Pete Havel

In addition to being an author, Pete Havel is a consultant, trainer and speaker for leading organizations on the issues of workplace culture and organizational leadership.

Pete is a former lobbyist and political consultant who proudly served some of America’s leading pro-business advocacy organizations. He’s also been a senior executive for top strategic communications firms. Havel provides clients the tools and techniques they need to solve problems that create financial, legal, and reputational risk, while reducing employee satisfaction and company productivity levels.

Pete is the president of his consulting firm, The Cloture Group.

He grew up in Massachusetts, but now calls Texas home. He’s a graduate of Baylor University and an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.
